GAUDÌ antoni-gaudi

The profile of Barcelona follows the hypnotic rhythm of Antoni Gaudí art. Considered one of the greatest figures of world architecture, Gaudi is distinguished by a unique and distinctive style. Born in June 25th 1852, he is considered the greatest exponent of Catalan modernism, and has inspired generations to come, being the forerunner of many artistic avant-gardes of the early twentieth century. Gaudi and Barcelona cannot be separated from each other: you are involved anywhere in the city by his traditional lines and figures, a wedding between urban and natural forms. Gaudi's attention was constantly drawn to the organic world, inexhaustible inspiration for his works. Its most representative works in Barcelona: Park Guell, Casa Mila (La Pedrera), Casa Batlló and La Sagrada Familia.

Las Ramblas de Barcelona

barcelona-ramblas

THE MOST FAMOUS WALK IN TOWN

One of the most famous symbols of the city, Las Ramblas is the long walk from Plaza Catalunya to the sea, where you find the statue of Columbus.

There are six avenues, each one with a name and its own history: together they form a one kilometer walk around a continuous show of street performers, mimes, jugglers, musicians and sellers, framed by a large number of shops, bars and restaurants.

"The creations continues incessantly
through the media of man."

Antoni Gaudì

barcelona_parc_guell

The most famous catalan architect, 150 years after his birthday, is still an unique example of the marriage between art, work, personal passions, creativity, originality, dream and legend.

Antoni Gaudì, born on June 25th 1852, came to be the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism, inspiring entire generations, if not a precursor of many of the artistic avant-garde of the early twentieth century.

gaudi

Barcelona and Gaudì cannot be separated one from the other: everywhere in the city one is involved by his typical lines and figures, a dreamy marriage between urban shapes and natural ones. Gaudì main attention was in fact the organic world, he used as inspiration for his works.

Gaudi created fluid structureswhere the ornament, the aesthetic value, is enclosed in the form itself. Culmination of his love for naturalism is clear when walking around in the Park Güell

barcelona-park-guell

During the last years of his career, dedicated almost exclusively to la Sagrada Família, Gaudí reached the culmination of this naturalistic style, creating a synthesis of all of the solutions and styles he had tried until then.
La Sagrada Familia, or Church of the Holy Family, is where that mysticism is most publicly expressed: the massive uncompleted church expresses the perfect harmony between structural and ornamental elements, between plastic and aesthetic, between container and content.

sagrada-familia-gaudi

To those who asked him when would the work of Sagrada Familia would be completed, he was used to reply:
"My client is in not in a hurry. God has all the time of the world".

... AND SUMMER FINALLY CAME

summer-solstice

Today, June 20th, is astronomically the last day of spring.
Tomorrow, June 21st, summer is going to start officially.

Solstice can be definied as the astronomical phenomenon for which it is named, which is readily observable by anyone on Earth: a "sun-standing." Since long time, Summer Solstice was celebrated by people all over the world.

It is said a perfect moment to through away old things and start a totally new season. Obviously, it could be taken literally or metaphorically. The point is during this week rubbish bins are full of everything. Anyway, solstice celebrations, even if really similar into each others, take place on different days depending on the region or the country. Starting today, they go on until June 24th, St John's day.

bonfire-san-juan

In Spain this is actually a real important appointment: la fiesta de San Juan. The night of 23 of June is the shortest of the year in the northern hemisphere and basically means the triumph of light over dark. The basic characteristics of these rituals are fire, water and sun. Legend says the bonfires that burn on this night can cure diseases of the skin and cleanse the body and soul. One can even change a bad year into a good one simply by jumping over the bonfire a minimum of three times.

san-juan-BARCELONA

If you are in Barcelona, well the party is assured! Actually Sant Joan (catalan version) is one of the craziest and funniest day in the whole year! Who has never been here in this days, can't imagine how many people are around down the street, the squares, the beach. You won't need to find the right place, because everywhere people will be partying.

Bonfires are lit in the streets or on the sand of the beaches, the rituals are jumping over the fire, touch the water that is blessed in the night or asking for some wishes. Special meals are also served on this occasion: coca, a kind of sweet bread with jam of fruit on top, will be sold everywhere.

The traditional way to celebrate Sant Joan Barcelona is on the beach: chiringuitos turn up the music and DJs and bands play during the night. Many people arrive to the beach at sunset time with drinks and food, and spend all the night enjoyng together. Really easy to get new friends, jumping to a bonfire to the other!

barcelona-san-juan

Remember to write down your porpouses for the new season starting to burn into the bonfire. And obviously wear the swim suite because at midnight everybody is going to jump waves! Traditions are tradicions.

Santa Maria del Mar

GOTHIC FASCINATION NEVER ENDS

santa-maria-del-mar-facade

Santa Maria del Mar Barcelona, named The Cathedral of the Sea, is peraphs the most impressive church in the whole city. It is an outstanding example of Catalan Ghotic and a place full of powerful energy.

It was built in only 55 years, between 1329 and 1384, and for the its construction the architects in charge were Berenguer de Montagut (designer of the building) and Ramon Despuig.

You reach the cathedral from a little street, in the heart of Born-La Ribera disctrict. It is a massive surprise impressing you, when you finally arrive in Plaça Santa María del Mar: suddenly the cathedral becomes visible, with its grandiosity.

The fascination of the church depends by many reasons. Exterior and interior give a differt sensation: whyle standing outside, you find in front of you tradicional Catalan gothic facades, with a predominance of horizontal lines and large bare surfaces. When entering the cathedral, dimensions and balances change. The interior gives an impression of light and spaciousness, extraordinarily beautiful. It is of the basilica type, with its three aisles forming a single space with no transepts and no architectural boundary between nave and presbytery. The spacing of the columns is the widest of any Gothic church in Europe.

Quiet, calm and majestic, the Cathedral of the Sea keeps an indescribable atmosphere inside. You feell wrapped and elevated. Along the aisles are shining candles, which, fortunately, there are still those with a real fire. The many stained-glass windows of the church of Santa Maria del Mar play an important role in giving this impression of spaciousness.

It is definitely a place to visit when around in the Born - Ribera district. As the interior has an excepional acoustic, concerts are often organized here. In case you find one, don't miss it, because when lightened and with music, Santa Maria del Mar is definitely unforgivable.

If interested, there is a book explaining the history of Santa Maria del Mar and of Barcelona in Middle Age: The Cathedral of the Sea by Idelfonso Falcones.

Address: Plaça Santa María del Mar, Born-Ribera, Barcelona Opening Times: Daily 9am - 1.30pm and 4.30pm - 8pm Admission: Free of charge How to Get There: Santa María del Mar church is a three minute walk from Jaume I Metro Station (Yellow Line)
