Here is another crazy tradition of Barcelona: The Christmas Day harbour swim Again this year - on Christmas day -  hundreds of brave men (and women) will dive into the freezing sea in Barcelona's port at la Rambla del Mar. Having a swim in the around 13 degrees cold water sounds quite crazy - but it is one of Barcelona's oldest sporting traditions (and also one of the oldest in whole Europe). Every year on the 25th of December a 200 m open water swimming race takes place in the harbour of Barcelona, called "Copa Nadal". christmas_swim_barcelona This year it will be the 103rd edition of the Christmas swim, which is getting organised now for more than 100 years by the Barcelona Swimming Club. The Cup was launched in 1908 and only has been suspended three times - in the years during the Spanish Civil War. The Copa Nadal is divided into nine different categories - with 130 swimmers in each. In case you want to participate.. registration is open until the 18th of December ;) But remember - only the brave need to apply. The Copa Nadal is always great fun..many participants are wearing fancy costumes, crazy hats and other funny stuff.
