Parc del Laberint d’Horta – Hide and Seek?
The Parc del Laberint d’Horta in the north west of Barcelona is the oldest surviving park of the city. In 2005 some scenes of the movie "The Perfume - Story of a Murderer" by Tom Tykwer were filmed in the park. And even now - 200 years after building the park it invites its visitors for a little hide and seek. The building of the Parc del Laberint d'Horta began in 1791. The Marquis of Llupià and Alfarràs, Joan Antoni Desvalls, designed the gardens in cooperation with an italian architect. Later on in the middle of the 19th century the park got extended and consisted from then on also of a romantic garden with flower beds, little squares and a even waterfall. In 1880 a household garden, which was known as the garden of the "insane" was created next to the Palau Desvalls. In the late 19th century the park turned into a venue for social and cultural meetings, so that there was also an open-air theatre being built. From 1970 on, the park is under municipal ownership and open for the public. In 1993 the park got restored with the financial help of the EU, and now the park is kind of a little secret of Barcelona. It is quite unknown, so you will never meet a lot of people there - and you can enjoy a couple of minutes away from the hassle of the city. The park itself is more than 7 ha big and conists of 2 areas: the classiscistic part with many sculptures of the Greek mythology, the first part which was built, and the romantic garden, which was built later. The center of the classicistic garden is the labyrinth, which was built in 1792 and consists of a 750 m long and 2,5 m wide cypress hedge. In the center of the labyrinth you will find (in case you reach it ;)) a round square with an Eros sculpture. From this square you can follow eight paths, but.. some of them lead into winding impasses. So.. can you find the way out and the open grot of the nymph "Echo", which is the guardian of the park? Have a try ;) Address: Pg. dels Castanyers 1 Metro: L3 to "Mundet" open: every day from 10 am on (in summer until 21:00, in winter until 18:00) admission: adults 2,17 €, students etc. 1,38 €, Wednesday and Sunday for free Searching for Apartments in Barcelona?
