They march the streets and try to scare the people.  Regarding to the firework and bangers, you should put on some clothes that won’t be ruined by a few sparks. Before the actual Correfoc,  there is also a more harmless event for children. Correfoc is definitely the most dangerous event of la Mercè 2014, but it is also the one you should not miss at all!

Even though it means a lot of fun to on those days, its origin is still religious. This is why it is a public holiday in Barcelona. The expression Mercè in the Catalan language is connoted to the life of the holy virgin. The basilica which is located in the Gothic Quarter and which dedicated to the virgin, get a special meaning on those days. The day of La Mercè is celebrated on the 24th of September but the festivals and parties are starting every year some days earlier. On the streets you can enjoy amazing parades, shows with drums and loud music and crazy people in costumes. This year’s highlights include: Friday September 20 18:00 La Cavalcada dels Barcelonins Il.lustres – Plaça Sant Jaume The opening procession. 22:00 Fireworks competition – Barceloneta beach La Mercè is also the day of the three day international fireworks competition.
